First, i thougth Direct Lake is a faster Direct Query, but ... not exactly ) It removes a few very specific pains: no refresh cycles, no data duplication inside the model, no staging pipelines just to load data. You query OneLake directly and data is always current. But everything after that stays the same. Relationships, joins, DAX- same engine, same cost, same performance.
